No Effect Whatsoever

I loved 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects'. Not only because Rahul Bose is a mind blowingly awesome actor, I even liked Mallika Sherwat in the movie. The movie had its story right and the characters were real. Sid's comic timing was impeccable and Trisha's expressions were just on spot. Even the supporting cast was perfect, especially Trisha's father aka Colonel Papa and Suchitra Pillai as Dracula. The supporting cast supported the story brilliantly and even though the climax was cliched, the movie was highly entertaining.

I did not expect a sequel to it at all. And when it was announced that there would be a 'Shaadi Ke Side Effects', I was more than thrilled. Farhan and Vidya as Sid and Trisha thrilled me more. I mean two fantastic actors on screen for the first time, it ought to be awesome. Right? Wrong. Since I just got married last year and have my own set of side effects I wanted to watch this movie to check if any of my side effects have been covered in this movie. And you know how much of it was covered? Zero. I'll talk about the reel movie first, before I talk about my own real life movie.

The movie starts with a bang. Literally. Sid and Trisha are busy with a role play drama and end up in bed in a plush five or seven star hotel. The hotel manager sees them "misbehaving" on the CCTV footage and calls Sid for a talk. The manager even uses dialogues like 'Sir, ye us type ka hotel nahi hai'. But all ends well when Sid tells him that the lady with him is not an escort (even though her clothes scream it out), but actually his lawfully wedded wife. The manager is amazed and after extracting tips from Sid, lets him go. Believe me when I say this, this was the best scene of the movie. And no, I'm not joking. Because the next scene shows a hyper tensed Sid waiting outside the bathroom as Trisha is taking a pregnancy test inside. No prizes for guessing that it is positive. They together decide not to have the baby as they are not ready yet. After an annoying hospital scene featuring quadruplets, Sid has a change of mind heart and rushes to the Operation Theatre to stop the fetal termination. No, not over the top at all.

With a baby in his life and an ever nagging clumsily dressed wife, Sid starts losing it. With the help of Trisha's brother in law he decides an take a break from his monotonous life every now and then. How you ask? Well, by booking a five star hotel, eating like a pig and sleeping like a sloth. Alone. Again, not over the top at all. When a highly independent Trisha decides to quit her job and be a mom full time by wearing hideous tents for clothes, Sid demotes from a five star to a PG. Yes. As a paying guest in the same city and no one suspects. Especially when the lead couple know almost all the parents in the city, thanks to the kiddie parties they attend. And yet, no one sees him living in a PG occasionally. Obviously, totally believable. Enter obnoxious room mate, Vir Das who seems to be in a 'Delhi Belly' hangover. Two scenes later, Sid and his room mate are seen dancing at wait, let me get this in the right order; some one's house party, some one's wedding and then some one's pool party.

While our Sid is back to being a bhramchari, his wife is busy with a neighbor cum handyman Shekhar aka Purab Kohli who has done a blink and miss appearance most likely at gun point. And by busy I don't mean sexually. He is taking her shopping and her daughter to the park. And Sid is jealous. As expected. But he doesn't do anything about it. Mr. Noballs, anyone?

Next, we have a maid with a nasal twang who prefers to be called aunty and takes over Sid's studio as her heavenly abode. And as expected, Sid doesn't so anything about it. To summarize the rest of the story, Trisha finds out about Sid's sojourns and gets angry and throws him out of the house. A song and lots of pleading later she accepts Sid back and tells him that she is pregnant with Shekar's child. Yes, you read that right. As expected Mr. Noballs decides to forgive her and stay happily every after. Turns out, it was lie to teach Sid a lesson. Duh! And then they live happily ever after. Trisha clearly wore the pants in the relationship, even though she does not wear any in the movie. Even though the movie is from Sid's point of view, it shows him as a victim as his wife showers attention only on their daughter and not him. The movie revolves around the life of a couple after they have a baby and not once about their marriage. It should have been called 'Baby Ke Side Effects' instead. Because there is much more to a marriage then a baby. Well, I just hope they lived happily ever after because I do not want the world to be blessed with another sequel of any kind of side effects.

A marriage is a huge thing. Even if it is a love marriage. You love the person completely but living under a single roof, is a different ball game altogether. Like habits, adjustments, food style and mainly in laws. Their expectations, their traditions and all that jazz. None of which was covered in the movie. Sid and Trisha are barely shown being in a marriage and are directly promoted to being parents. And the first scene of the movie is total bull shit. You don't need to stage a role play to have a spark in the marriage. If you love each other enough, the spark will always remain. Cal and I still surprise each other with new things, dates and gifts. It's not to add a spice element to our marriage but because we feel like doing something special for one another. Because we love each other. Sure, we both do not want to have a baby. But it's because we are not ready to be parents and not because we feel that our relationship will go downhill once we have a child. Like I said before, a shaadi has a lot more things attached to it other than just a baby.

As much as I love Farhan and Vidya as an actor, this movie is total nonsense and is only made to show how desperately Vidya is in need of a gym trainer and a stylist. Also Vidya, women do not go to buy tomatoes wearing a kurti minus pants and in high heels. Did they even have a stylist for her? Jeez, I'd sue him straight away if I was Vidya.

For singles who have already seen the movie, believe me this is not how marriages are in real life. For married people without kids who have seen the movie, do not have a baby. For married people who are pregnant and have seen the movie, ladies please assure your husband that you will not turn into Trisha. For married people with kids who have seen the movie, please feel free to laugh your ass off. And for all those who have not seen the movie, you lucky ba$tar*s!

  4. Loved the review of course!!!
I guess I am lucky too!!!
I wonder why reel life doesnt follow the real life, more people might connect to it and then besides just being funny the movies can be informative too

  5. I found the movie extremely offensive. So what if a woman starts paying more attention to the baby than the husband after she becomes a mother? It's only natural! The baby requires more attention. And if a man can't understand that, then he should never agree to become a parent. Drunken sex is not an excuse. Bullshit. I wanted to punch someone after watching the movie. Vidya Balan's clothes are the least of the problems of this film.

    1. Another way of looking at it probably. But personally I don't think I'd be the kind of woman who lets go of everything for her baby. Maybe its just me.

Drunken sex, totally agree. That was utter nonsense. But the thing that troubled me most was Vidya's clothes. I don't know why, they bothered me to dangerous extents. I wanted to punch her, after the movie!

  7. Sou, I was aghast on watching this film. I mean, how many more films would have those done to death jokes on how the husband is the victim? Also, the film criticizes all kinds of choices and justifies almost anyone. I mean, take a stand for heavens sake. I would have liked to know how the film would progress from where it ended - how Vidya takes a day off at a 5star hotel. Also too many logic flaws - struggling musician, lack of financial support from wife and he goes splurging everywhere.

On her clothes, it looked like from Global Desi. I usually like their stuff and thought they purposely dressed/designed it for her to show how the absurd character stopped bothering about anything after the baby happens. Crazy!

    1. I wanted to see that part too, but unfortunately it ended by ended. Fortunately actually! :P

The dress she wore to but tomatoes looked like Global Desi to me too. Their prints are excellent. Maybe they purposely did it too, never know. Either wise it caused a sore eye.

  8. Thank you for posting this, was about to watch it with Adit. If this is the nonsense that the film is about, we are better off without watching it. And I could totally relate to everything you have listed about what actually happens in a marriage. Having experienced it recently, love or arranged marriage doesn't matter. Once you get married, there's a whole different world on the other side. And yeah, there's more to a marriage than just a baby. Sadly, some relatives have made it their business that we should have a baby soon :( Fighting the urge to yell at them.

  10. hahaha!! Since I was on a holiday, I missed this one. And thank God I did! The storyline seems totally crappy. I pity those who think that married life is actually like that.
