C: Chick Flicks #AtoZChallenge

For someone whose list of favorite movies include 'The Godfather' and 'The Shawshank Redemption', chick flicks are an eye sore. Yeah, that's me. I am a big movie buff and I have to watch at least a couple of movies in the theater every month. I also like to go back to my hard disk and pick some from my movie collection during weekends and watch it over a glass of wine. But no matter what the situation is, I would never "want" to watch a chick flick. Being a girl some people are shocked when I tell them I do not like to watch movies like 'Miss Congeniality' and '27 Dresses'. But that's the truth. I find these movies to be really stupid and hard to digest at times.

To start with, I hate the term 'chicks'. I think it is offensive to women. And to chicks. Likewise, I hate being called 'babe' too. When someone used this word I have an image of a cute little pink pig on my mind and not a curvaceous woman. I know of a lot of women who watch chick flicks to get advice on their life and love life. My advice to them would be to get a life. Having said that, I have watched quite a few chick flicks. Only because they were on TV! I have not watched 'Sex and the city', 'The princess diaries' or more movies like this. The idea of romance in such movies are flawed. Or maybe there is too much of romance in them that ruins it.

I have always been a realist and even though I did read a few Mills and Boons while growing up, I have always had a practical approach to love and relationships. I do not like fantasy stuff or the happily ever afters. Most of them are too good to be true. Most chick flicks are really silly and at times I end up feeling so stupid after watching them. 'The devil wears Prada' is a movie I liked because it showed fashion and the concept of following your dreams at the same time. Plus, Meryl Streep! Today I read the IMDB list of the top 100 chick flicks of all time. I barely had heard about twenty and had hardly watched five of them.

I like movies that tell a story. A nice strong story. Movies like 'Rainman', 'The blind side', 'The pursuit of happyness', 'Dead poet's society' strike a chord within me and I can watch them as many times as possible. These may not be my ultimate favorite movies, but they surely are on the list. Chick flicks are something I watch to pass time. A no brainer and they clearly do not stay with me after I've finished watching the movie. But I know a few girls who go crazy about chick flicks. I do agree that some movies have drool worthy men, but some girls look at such movies as their own life! I've heard of couples fighting because the man did not want to watch a chick flick but the girl insisted on one. I find such things super silly.

I do agree that it is a matter of choice. But for me, chick flicks will always be the last choice. Too much mush, too much candy floss is definitely not my cup of tea.

  1. I don't mind chick flicks. I can get your 'angst' about the 'chick' reference, but hey, none of this should really surprise you. In fact, there have been plenty of times where my wife's and my ideas of relaxing Friday was to chill out with a glass of wine, some good food and watch a rom-com. PErsonally, I deem them necessarily for me to maintain my sanity - but they again, not everything is for everyone.

  2. I love the Rain Man film and any film that has a strong sense of story. I haven't seen any chick flicks yet but it is not saying that I won't.

  3. Well, I think I am the exact opposite of you! I prefer chick-flicks...its kind of like a dumbing down time for me, watching movies that are light and easy on my mind. Sci-fis and super-hero kinds are also on my fav-list! But I do agree that every once in a while I want to watch a sensible, serious film like Forest Gump or the said Rain-man. Cheers to movies :)

  4. I don't really enjoy watching movies, and would rarely decide to just go and watch a movie, or watch one at home. Unless someone else wants to watch a movie. They literally have to drag me along. I'd rather spend some time reading a book or watching vlogs.

I get the reason why you don't like chick flicks though. I've read Princess Diaries (all 10 of the books). That line where you said the romance is too much in these flicks? Imagine the torture in the 10 books. Unrealistic love stories, in which the hero and heroine always end up together. Pfft!

Enjoyed this post thoroughly, Soumya :)

  5. I share your interest in movies that have depth. Still, I wouldn't mind watching a good romcom once in a whileand if it is a good script than an added bonus. Just recently couldn't stop myself from watching 50 first dates once again :)

  6. I like chick flicks but veering more towards the rom-com side! I find them light and nice, and no, i'd not pester hubby to watch it with me, neither my sister, both of them frown at my choice of movies. But I'm hardly the serious types!

  7. Pursuit of Happyness is my all time favorite. Devil wears Prada, Rainman - yes! I liked Hitch too. But not much into Chick Flicks. And I agree. The word is derogatory. I am not much of a movie watch so I pick then very carefully and almost just one a year may be in theater. Good one for C!

  8. I detest the term 'chick' too, be in flicks or lits! I do enjoy the genre as long as the characters are interesting. And mostly I watch these when I want to unwind. But I don't see why people would fight over watching it together! Tastes vary and what's point in forcing someone to watch if it's not their taste?

  9. I totally get that. My preferred chick flick is something with enough war or adventure that my husband is happy to sit and watch it with me. My favorite...which doesn't actually fit in the category if you ask me: Princess Bride. *sigh* Such an awesome movie.

  10. Sid has a point. Would the word rom-com make it more appealing?
Because if so, I have a ton of them which I could recommend.

  11. It really depends on my mood which movie I want to watch at times. Though I'm a hopeless romantic at heart, I hardly like these chick flicks unless it's a very good movie. I usually go for the animated ones or mind-engrossing movies!

  12. I like to watch chick flicks. My issue is if its too chicky flicky.. But love some senseless movies.

  13. I do like chick flicks and I do like realistic movies too. It's ok to watch some mush and silliness sometimes :D

  14. I get annoyed when I see movies that make women look like some stupid and confused person..Like really annoyed.

So many people have asked me to watch - Dead Poets Society. Gotta check this one

  15. I rarely watch movies but out of the few movies that I have watched there have been a few chick flicks. When I am not in the mood for some serious stuff these are just an easy breezy watch but yes the movies are too good to be true.

  16. It is matter of choice but I guess people should know the difference between happily ever after movies and reality. Godfather is an ultimate movie that can be watched over and over, even its sequel.

Chick flicks(Well I do not like the word chick) are meant for timepass and shouldn't be taken as part of life.

  17. I love chick flicks! They can be funny and story-driven if done well. I've seen Love Actually zillion times and will probably watch it at every Christmas until it's available 😊

  18. I agree that the term "chick" flick is offensive to women and there are plenty of men who enjoy them too so what's with that? :D

  19. Ugh chicks and babes! ! Hate those terms. That said, I like chickflicks. Oh I'm a realist too and don't believe in them but I enjoy them still. Also, there are good ones and bad ones so one has to take a pick.

  20. I do watch the occasional chick flick, fantasy, horror and scifi-- all of them have their own appeal. On some days all I need is to escape for a few hours!

  21. I almost didn't read your post because it was called Chick Flicks - then thought I'd go through it to see what you have to say. I hate the term Chicks too and those damn chick flick movies engender the most stupid ideas about relationships. Sky high expectations and no reality check at all. Sad. I love Dead Poets Society.

  22. Totally with you on the "chicks" and "babe" matters. The glares I have given have reduced many a relationship to ashes :P And happily so..

  23. Agree with you about 'chicks'. And 'babe'. I do love chick flicks and mushy rom-coms though :D

  28. Agreed - "chick flick" is offensive, as is "women's lit".

  29. I feel its a matter of own choice. And yes chick flick sounds lame, although i like watching the "happy endings, comedy ones".
