P: Phoebe Buffay #AToZChallenge

While it is always debatable as to who is one's favorite character in F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Phoebe Buffay will always remain the most inspirational to me. Clearly the outsider among the other five, she still manages to hold on her own and serves as a rock to her friends in their tough times. Offbeat and ditzy, Phoebe is wonderfully weird. She has her own weird beliefs and sticks to it no matter what who has to say. She's been on her own since a young age and has had a pretty rough life, but she has never given up on a chance for happiness or to find love.

Phoebe has had a very bad childhood. Her father abandoned them, her mother committed suicide and her twin sister Ursula wants nothing to do with her no matter how hard Phoebe tries to include her in her life. Owing to not having a regular mother or father around, she shows a great deal of maternal instinct towards her younger step-brother Frank, despite his lack of intelligence. He's the only family she has and she goes out of her way to make Frank and his much older wife, Alice, happy. When Phoebe decides to become a surrogate for them, she doesn't think of how hard it will be for her physically or emotionally. All she cares is that how happy her decision has made them. She goes through nine months of carrying triplets only to have them taken away from her. She does that selflessly for her brother. That's just who she is.

Phoebe believes in a lot of whimsical stuff. She does not believe in evolution or gravity, much to Ross' chagrin, but does believe that her mother's spirit resides in a cat who was found in her guitar case. Phoebe does things her own way and doesn't care what other have to say about it. Clearly not a talented singer and guitar player, she still plays regularly and makes music like it comes naturally to her. This goes on to prove that if you have confidence, you can pull almost anything off!

Phoebe is a vegetarian because she loves animals and yet loves plants equally. While she is against people cutting trees to have them for Christmas at home, she still is the one to believe in Santa. Phoebe is childlike and mature in her own way and gives her friends some really good advice when the need comes. Not the one to judge anyone, Phoebe surely does dance like no one's watching.

Phoebe's love life hasn't been easy either. The only man she was crazy about all her life was David, the scientist guy, and yet when he has to choose between his career and her, she makes him choose his career even if it means that she has to let him go to Russia. Her choices in men are very different too. She dates men from various fields and yet doesn't have a serious relationship with anyone. Maybe it has to do with her upbringing or the fear of having a wrong family instead. When Mike, the piano guy, comes into her life, he is nothing like anyone Phoebe has dated, but still they click! Mike is innocent and weird in his own way and together with Phoebe, they make their own music.

Phoebe is not that conventional girl next door, but she sure is the magic that you need in this insane world. Think of her as pixie dust and everything will fall into place.

  7. She is my fav, followed closely by Chandler. You have listed her out here so so well and it's her living in her won bubble that really wins me over. Love the laughs she brings about too.

  10. I completely love your choice. Phoebe is really cute. I love her conversations with Ross. She's so sure of herself and all her theories, it's hilarious. Also remember the time an old woman's soul came to live in her? Oh I love those episodes. And her Smelly Cat is epic.
