What it is about:

Krishnan meets Malini in college, woos her and they get married. They have a son Surya. They are a very close-knit and friendly family. Krishnan still loves Malini madly and still continues to woo her and she continues to be crazy about him. Krishnan and Surya are more like friends. Surya meets Meghna on a train journey and falls head over heels in love with her. She rejects him, saying that they have known each other for a very short period and it's not possible to fall in love without taking time to understand him. When Meghna tells him that she's moving to the US to pursue her studies, Surya is heartbroken. A few months later, Surya goes to the United States, with the acceptance of his father, and meets Meghna in San Francisco. Meghna finally understands the love Surya has for her and she confesses her love to him as well. A couple of days later, when Meghna goes to Oklahoma City for a project, she is unfortunately killed in a bombing.

Surya is unable to cope up with this loss. Priya, his sister's friend tries to help him get over it, and even confesses her love for him, but Surya is unable to forget Meghna. He soon resorts to drugs and this almost kills his parents. They ask him to take a trip somewhere and enjoy a long break to rejuvenate himself. When Surya gets to Kashmir and an incident leads him to singlehandedly rescue a kidnapped child. This motivates him to join the army. He moves away leaving his loving parents and the girl who loves him dearly.

Will Surya forget Meghna? Will this family live together happily? What happened when the backbone of the family passes away?

What I loved about it:

I do understand that this is the only regional language in my A to Z so far, and I didn't do this because I did not think of any other good movie for V. This Tamil movie has been one of my favorites ever since I saw it around six years ago. Suriya plays the role of both the father and son in this one, and it clearly shows the fabulous actor that he is. Simran as Malini is the perfect besotted wife to Krishnan and the loving and supporting mother to Surya. Sameera Reddy as the quiet and coy Meghna is impressive too. The base of this movie is love. Be it the relationship between Krishnan and Malini or Surya and Meghna or the love Krishnan, Malini and Surya have for each other, each of it has a soul of its own. This movie shows us the importance of family and how having loving and understanding parents can help a child grow up to be a nice person and help him/her get over any loss.

Surya is the backbone of this one and he singlehandedly elevates the movie with his acting prowess. Be it as the caring father, or the much-in-love boy, or as the man grieving the loss of his love or as the strong and tough army man, he excels in every frame. The only weak link in this movie is Divya Spandana as Priya. Her love for Surya is not convincing enough and her nonchalant acting honestly did annoy me. Thankfully, the rest of the cast more than make up for it.

The movie has some splendid songs as well. With music by Harris Jayaraj, this is a given.

Vaaranam Aayiram means a thousand elephants. How it is related to the concept of the movie, read about it here.

Runners-up: None.

This post is a part of the A To Z Challenge for April, where my theme for this year is Movies I Love.
