#FeministMondays | I Do And The Aftermath

Image Source In my previous post , I spoke about how women who drink are judged and scrutinized by the society. Today, I want to raise another important question and attempt to answer it in my own way. As of today, in India, there are 945 females to every 1000 males. And trust me, this is a better statistic when compared to what it was earlier. We all know the answer to this imbalance, don't we? Female foeticide. Years ago, I wrote a post about this very topic and it hurt me so much to write that. A few days ago, I happened to chance upon that post again and I thought what could be the primary reason for people, men and women alike not wanting to give birth to the girl child. As a new month began and a certain loan amount was cut from my bank account, I got my answer. It has been close to five years since I got married, but the loan that I took for my wedding is still on. My parents are still paying off debts that they had incurred at the time of my wedding. Yes, five year...

N: Nidhi

Image Source They isolated me as soon as my daughter was born as in the quest of a male heir, they forgot humanity. All the hospital bills were paid for and they left my suitcase and my things in the hospital room and left. Even my husband did not feel the need to come and see his new born child, he just left me a wad of cash. I collect my belongings and leave the cash untouched. I have all that I wanted with me; my treasure, my daughter Nidhi. *In the context of Hindu mythology, Nidhi is a treasure, constituted of nine treasures belonging to Kubera, the God of wealth. This five sentence fiction is written for the topic ' Isolated ' at Lillie McFerrin Writes . Linking to the  A to Z Challenge .

Escape

I looked around and saw them all sleeping. I peeped out of the door and slowly walked towards the exit. I was in pain, but at this moment the only thing that I wanted to do was to get out of here. The newspapers next day spoke of an abandoned girl baby in a hospital.

Back into the Womb

(Pic: le Jardin, 1962, by Max Ernst) Nothing feels safe anymore I have been to hell and back I do not want this cruel existence I'm waiting to fade into black Beautiful blue waters know my pain Thoughts wander along the barren sand Happiness evades me by the second Unable to produce the magic wand The lush green trees haunt me Reminding me of all my crimes They were seeds a while ago While I smothered my own chimes A son they expect from me Seven daughters I had to kill My womb has become a cemetery Trying for an heir to their will I loved my unborn daughters Wanted them to see the world Those around wouldn't let that be With every birth, abuses were hurled Arrows are supposed to lead to a way But for me, they pierce my soul I'm only a child bearing machine Confined to a dusty hole They do not understand my agony I'm prisoned, until I bear a son Tied naked to a lone window This knot can never be u...

The Unfair Sex

How many of you knew that women are referred to as the ‘fairer’ sex? First, fairer in terms of color and then fairer in terms of letting men live their lives for them. An old saying goes this way. “mukhyo dharmaH smr^tiShu vihito bhartr^shushruShANam hi” Roughly translating to “ Women are enjoined to be of service to their husbands ”. It’s 2013 and still more than 90% of the population thinks the same. Out of it 40% are women. It is sad and irritating at the same time. I’m not a feminist here, but the point is simple. When both men and women come from the same set of sperms, why the inequality? Now you might argue saying that it’s the man who brings the sperm, hence he’s superior. But of what use is an uncooked bun without the oven? The woman not only contributes an egg but also willingly carries the fetus within her for 9 whole months and endures bone crushing pain in giving the family an heir. Doesn’t that in itself make her superior? I’m afraid not many people thin...

Turn The Mirror Around

O Ri Chiraiya Nanhi si chidiya Angnaa mein phir aaja re So how many of us remember these lyrics till date? Well, I do. How many of us recall the very first episode of Aamir Khan's brainchild, ' Satyamev Jayate '? I do. And I shall do for the rest of my life. Because it is difficult to forget the things that come back to haunt you.  When I got married four months back, a lot of people blessed me. Most of those blessings were in Sanskrit, which when translated means this 'May you be the mother of a hundred sons". I just smiled and nodded. Its 2013 and the fact that people still believe that sons are more precious than daughters came as a rude shock to me. When I first heard of the word 'gendercide' or 'genocide', I was blinking. Then I too resorted to the information giant Wikipedia for answers. This is what Wiki had to say. " By analogy, gendercide would be the deliberate extermination of persons of a particular sex (or gen...
