"How long are you there for", Alan's mother yelled on the call.
"Not sure, ma. For a while", Alan said coldly.
"Aren't you aware of your responsibilities? I can't believe you are throwing away money on a holiday, instead of giving it to us.""It's my life, ma. I've worked hard to be able to afford a vacation. I'm well aware of the responsibilities. You never stop reminding me."
"That's your duty as a son."
"I'm your son, not an investment." Alan said and hung up the phone knowing very well that he'll not be booking a flight back home.

It can be such a tricky situation for some kids who wish to live life their way once they are adults but are constantly reminded of their responsibilities toward their parents each time they even think of stepping out.
ReplyDeleteOh don't even get me started on it. Parents need to realize that children are from them, not for them.
DeleteSounds like a fine idea not to go home. Well done.
ReplyDeleteYou bet.
DeleteSeems as if he has had enough of the family demands, maybe someone else can look after mother for once. James McEwan
ReplyDeleteAbout time. Thanks, James.
DeleteI wouldn't go home either.
ReplyDeleteGood decision.
DeleteMany of us can relate to this. My mother's epitaph should read "She did her duty".
ReplyDeleteOh boy, can totally relate to what you say here.
DeleteI think the MC made up his mind a long time ago that things were going to be different. The vacation was the closure he was looking for.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he finally got there.
DeleteIt’s a sad situation when kids are trapped in the name of their duties and responsibilities. Unfortunately, many parents haunt their kids with the responsibilities they need to fulfill as the parents have lived all their life taking care of the kids. You have captured a lifetime of story in a hundred words so effectively, Soumya.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vinitha. This pressure has killed so many dreams and lives.
DeleteDear Soumya,
ReplyDeleteA son is more than an investment. Nicely done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Indeed. If only all parents understood that. Thank you, Rochelle.
DeleteOh dear, it's a fine balancing act to try and maintain.
ReplyDeleteA really tough act.
DeleteI would never go home if I were Alan.
ReplyDeleteDitto.
